DAUGHTER OF THE DARK LORD – Creature Feature – Bubalos

BUBALOS-

An animal that is similar to what we know as a bison or buffalo; they roamed on the Provinces of Hell and were the main food source for dragons, and also on the menu for the citizens.  They were bulky oversized animals, not terribly intelligent and often cranky, but extremely useful.  Large fields were cultivated outside the Palace, and as the bubalos were procured, pens were built for the massive number of creatures.  They migrated twice a year from the more barren lands of the Provinces to the northwestern edge of Hell proper, where they fed on the grasslands produced during that time of year.  The Dark Lord’s daughter, Katherine, even had bubalos brought in to feed the Hell hounds living within the city.  Being such large creatures, they were often bridled and used for transporting supplies from place to place when needed.   The hide from a bubalos could be tanned and used for various articles of clothing or types of baggage.

HELL HOUNDS – REVISITED

hound

The Hell Hounds were initially encountered in the first book of the Dragomeir Series, “The Emerald Dragon.”  These creatures were living at Mt. Drago after making a mass exodus from the Provinces of Hell, with the help of the Queen Mother or “The Ariella.”  Inside Mt. Drago, they took up shop in an area of the mountain called Tarin’s Gallery.

The Hell Hounds are a genetically altered species that started off with a considerable amount of wolf and pit bull in their heritage.  No one is really sure what else went into the mixture, but what we do know is that they went after size and stamina.  The full grown males of this species top over three hundred pounds, stand about five feet tall and can run for days.  Their fur is course and sometimes sparse, and they are predominately brown in color with brown eyes.  Each one has a different and uneven muzzle, with teeth that protrude in a variety of directions, even with their mouths closed.  They also sport an opposing thumb and forefinger.

What the Dark Lord of the Provinces didn’t expect was that they were a species on the fast track to sentience.  Generations later, they were no longer just guard dogs.  Through sheer will, a lot of death and destruction, and the help of a young girl, the Dark Lord’s daughter, they managed to escape.

By the eleventh generation they were not only intelligent, but self aware and very unhappy with the Dark Lord.  That’s where “The Ariella” entered the picture and gave them an opportunity they couldn’t ignore – a chance to break away from a life of cruelty, maltreatment and servitude.

The Hell Hounds of today are drastically different than the ones written about in history.  The ones in Mt. Drago would rather not fight; they are vegetarians and prefer to stay in one place to rear their children.  They are deeply spiritual and have a great sense of humor.

Creature Feature – The Savants

savants

In the Dragomeir Series Book Three, “Egg of the Amphitere”, some of the more unusual visitors to Mt. Drago were the Savants. They entered Mt. Arcadia first, and impressed with three of the Amphitere Dragons, after having just appeared in the common area. Within minutes they disappeared and went to Mt. Drago to present information to Queen Mother. It was not received well.

The Savants were an ancient race of diminutive people that hailed from Oblivion. Standing only four feet tall and incredibly frail, they had managed to impress with the most violent of the species of dragons, the Amphiteres. The people of Mt. Drago only saw three of this race, all female, although Tanis had a difficult time determining their sex until an introduction was made.

All three of them wore floor length white smocks, were bald, and only spoke by writing their messages on a series of Post it Notes.

Seemingly able to move through both time and space, these unusual females quickly angered Queen Mother into a bold show of power to establish who was in control . . . and who was not.

The leader of the Savants called herself Caesarea Maritima (Also a city in Israel), and although very old, had the body of a child. The other Savants looked identical to Caesarea making it difficult to tell them apart. Their existence in our world was made possible due to the Hearths they controlled, and an underlying hatred for the Dark Lord.

The Savants can be found in my forthcoming book, “Egg of the Amphitere.”

DRAGOMEIR SERIES – Creature Feature – “The Sabers”

This time on Creature Features let’s take a closer look at the species known as The Sabers.   These creatures can be found in Book Two of the Dragomeir Series, “Flight of the Aguiva.” They are one of the older races of non-human, quadrupeds and considerably larger than most. Their leader is an enormous Alpha male named Suyet Suun. Try to imagine a nine foot long, eight hundred pound Bengal Tiger in a yellowish gold color, with tusks coming off the side of his face – ten inch long, large tusks. He was at the very least half again the size of a Bengal. Huge feet below a shear muscled body, and topped off with the most regal of heads. That was Suyet Suun. The females of The Sabers are smaller versions but just as beautiful. The Sabers are mammals and give birth in the same way as the feline species we have on Earth.

These creatures are fully sentient, and thanks to the demons on the Provinces, have been placed on the endangered species list. The demons hunt them for sport, or did until they moved to Mt. Drago. They are peaceful, but become warlike when their young are threatened. Fierce fighters, they unfortunately do not have the numbers to fend off the superior volume of the Hordes of Hell.

DRAGOMEIR SERIES – Creature Features – “Nata, the Grey Lunarian”

Nata was one of the first people Tanis met on his entrance to Mt. Drago. Nata had crash landed outside of Phoenix in the Arizona desert. Near death, he began hearing a voice calling him. Following the voice, Nata eventually found Mt. Drago and the dragon he calls Fellona, or Fe for short. His race is referred to by Tanis as having a tiny stature. Tanis went on to say that Nata’s voice sounded just like the Munchkins from “The Wizard of Oz,” and his body was roughly the same size. He had an enormous head, large black eyes, and the tiniest mouth he had ever seen on a living creature.

Nata’s technology is only surpassed by that of Tanis and his suit. The mountain regularly uses the little alien’s anti-gravity to carry larger objects and even dragons at times. The Lunarians are war- like, and have been space faring and nomadic since their home planet was attacked and stripped of its atmosphere.

Below you can see a portrait of Nata of the Lunarian race.

Nata makes a second appearance in Book Two of the series, “Flight of the Aguiva.”

DRAGOMEIR SERIES – Creature Features – “Pieces of Eight”

Pieces of Eight – Technically, they are genetically altered, Class Eight Demons. They appear in “The Emerald Dragon,” and were responsible for bringing the first of the Aguiva dragons. What the Dark Lord was looking for was a demon with the strength of a Class Eight, but with a much smaller overall size. These demons stand about six feet tall, weigh in at about two hundred pounds, and on the Provinces are considered tiny. The size factor was adhered to because of the Aguiva dragons. It takes a human sized person to fly one of the War Birds. Anything larger and the Aguiva wouldn’t be able to lift the weight.

The look and feel of the Pieces of Eight is very similar to their counterparts, the standard Class Eight Demon, just smaller with less pronounced facial features. They generally have dark brown hair and eyes. They are strong, fast, and fiercely protective of their War Birds. The demon pictured below is an artist’s rendition of Caleb, complete with his flight suit. Caleb flies the Aguiva dragon named Seven. There are one hundred and seventy- five demons within the ranks of the Pieces of Eight. Other intriguing creatures to come!
